Lydia Lunch is like if Lydia Deetz grew up and became an underground version of Siouxsie Sioux. Basically, she is incredibly groovy, and since I seem to be focusing more on real-life Strange Girls at the moment, I think it is only fair that I do a post on her.
Lydia Lunch played a prominent role in the No Wave movement, starting out in the band Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, but later going solo shortly afterwards.
Beforehand, she’d been living in an art commune from the age of thirteen, which was filled with all sorts of groovy people. In fact, throughout her career she’s rubbed shoulders with many great artists, including Brian Eno, Einsturzende Neubauten, Steven Severin, The Birthday Party and Willy DeVille, who christened her Lunch as she apparently had the habit of stealing lunches from a band called The Dead Boys. At least it’s alliterative.
As well as No Wave, Lydia Lunch’s music can also be classified as post-punk, industrial and experimental. Not only that, but she’s also dabbled in other mediums too, including spoken word poetry and underground films.
Lunch’s work is just as good as her image is: dark, quirky, bold, raw and unique. While her music isn’t really Gothic (I think anyhaps), she definitely has a strong Gothic appeal, and her whole look seems quite Goth to me. But let us not just put things into tidy little boxes; no matter what Lunch is, she’s terrific, and a true original. Who doesn’t love confrontational, creative weird girls, after all?
I am going to be very upset if The Weirdest Band in the World does not do a post on her sometime.
Hmm… I’ve never heard of her but now I’m intrigued. I will be looking more into her. I must say she is much braver than I. In the first picture she is terribly close to an angry cat. As a cat owner I can say that there is no worse vengeance than that bestowed upon you by an angry cat *shivers*
Angry cats scare me.
As they should. I’ve been attacked many times by an angry cat. It’s worse when they are angry and attack for no reason. Sometimes I’ll just be sitting there and my cat will run up and attack me for no reason.
